Pool Care Basics
To keep the pool water clean and fresh, few basic steps are required. Here we are providing some information for easy pool maintenance.
Know your Filtration system
Filter is one of the most important part of swimming pool and removes debris and microscopic matter. It is important to wash the filter weekly and treat it with chemical cleaner once in a season. The pump is used to make the filter work. These are two types of filters that are used in swimming pools for the removal of dirt and debris that enter the pool through various means.

Understanding Pressure Gauges
The pressure gauge is the device that reads the amount of pressure building inside the filter. The device helps in keeping the pool healthy and safe. The gauge is located on the top of filter and the numbers represent the the force of water running through the system.
If the pressure is low, it means something is blocking the water intake into the filter and if the pressure is high, it means that either filter is working very hard and require cleaning or either water is very dirty.
Swimming Pool Water Circulation
Every pool has a pump that circulates water through the filter system and the pool. The circulation system moves water from the pool and sends it back to the pool removing dust, dirt and debris. The more the system circulates water, the more it resist the chance of growing bacteria and algae. Running the pump and circulating the water is the best way to prevent any problem.
Pool Water Level
The best water level to make the pool skimmer operate is between one third and one half the way up the opening of the pool skimmer.
Swimming Pool Cleaning
The best water level to make the pool skimmer operate is between one third and one half the way up the opening of the pool skimmer.
Vacuuming a poolTo vacuum a pool we need a basic pool cleaning system that includes a vacuum head, a vacuum hose and a telescopic pole.
Water testing and analysis
Every pool has characteristics that can be measured and adjusted. One most important task in swimming pool is to maintain water balance. Test the pool water two to three times a week to ensure optimum swimming environment.
Test | Ideal Range |
---|---|
pH | 7.2 – 7.6 |
Total Alkalinity | 120 – 150 ppm |
Calcium Hardness (Concrete Pools) | 200 – 250 ppm |
Calcium Hardness (Vinyl Pools) | 175 – 225 ppm |
Free Chlorine | 1 – 3 ppm |
Free Bromine | 3 – 5 ppm |
Metals : Copper | 0 ppm |
Metals : Iron | 0 ppm |
pH is the measurement of acid and base in the pool water. If the pH shifts to the acidic side of scale, there may occur corrosion of pool surface and equipment. If the pH shifts to the base side of scale, there may occur scaling deposits and cloudiness of water.
These situations will be tackle by using pH increaser and pH decreaser
It denotes the amount of dissolved calcium present in pool water. The low level of calcium can causes the etching of plaster finish and shorten the life of vinyl liners. The high calcium levels results in the calcium deposit on pool surface and the equipment.
Total AlkalinityIt refers to the alkaline material dissolves in the pool water. The low alkalinity can cause the variation in pH and high alkaline levels makes it difficult to adjust the pH as needed.
MetalsThere should not be any metals present in pool water as these can cause staining and makes the pool water to change colors. It is necessary to determine the source of metal contamination and remove it permanently.
Sanitize With ChlorineChlorine serves as most important factor used in the treatment of pool water. It quickly dissolves in water and kills the bacteria and virus so that these cannot multiply and cause infection.
Stabilized ChlorineThe stabilized chlorine products kills bacteria and sanitize the pool water. These products are to be protected from sunlight degradation and helps in keeping the pool clean and clear.
There available two forms of stabilized chlorine products, which includesTrichloro isocyanuric acid and chlorine granules.
The trichloro isocyanuric acid is available as 200 gram tablets and chlorine granules are used as water sanitizer and stabilizer.
Shocking the pool on regular basis is important for keeping the pool clean and clear. The added waste to the water by swimmers and environment has to be eliminated regularly in order to prevent cloudy water and algae.
Chloramine Problems
Chloramines are the result of insufficient free chlorine and usually results in a strong odor of chlorine in and around the pool. The chloramines are the combination of nitrogen and active chlorine.
Chloramines are poor sanitizers and are gaseous in nature. These can cause following physical symptoms:
|
In addition to these, the pool tends to discolor and become milky or green in color with algae due to the low sanitizing ability of the combined chlorine.
AlgaecideThis prevents algae and acts as the back-up of the normal sanitization program. The algaecide is compulsory to be added to pool water after every shock treatment as algae converts sunlight into food and release waste that becomes the feeding ground of harmful bacteria and other microorganisms.
Chemical Care
Providing proper chemical care is the last step in the pool maintenance program. It is to apply right products to your pool water and keep it crystal clear. Addition of chemicals also helps in providing a safe and sanitized swimming environment and protect pool surface and equipment from damage.
